This course examines how concepts gender(s) and sexuality have shaped Jewish culture and practice throughout history. It traces contours of Jewish thinking about gender(s) and sexuality in the biblical and rabbinic literature, examining formative traditions of law, practice and theology, in conversation with early Christian literature. Students will explore transformations of Jewish life into the contemporary period, including feminist rituals, queer and transgender theologies and culture(s).
