Throughout the quarter, we'll gather with scholars, artists, and organizers whose work moves us toward collective liberation. By reflecting on IDA's legacy, and exploring movements for social transformation, past and present, we will explore how scholarship, creative practice, and organizing intertwine to shape our reality and change our material conditions. What political acts of imagination allow us to remember and recover submerged ways of organizing our communities? How can art and creative practice be rehearsals for enacting the futures we want? This year, we will meet twice a week. Tuesdays are lecture and discussion; Thursdays we have IDA Lab, where we put theory into practice by making, doing, playing, and experimenting. Students enrolled for 1 unit are only required to come on Tuesdays. Students enrolling for 2 or more units are required to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students enrolling for 5 units are expected to attend on off-site trip (transportation and food provided.) This year we will be traveling to visit renowned Oakland-based performance artist and sculptor, Xandra Ibarra (Week 5,) and Sucka Free Collective, a multi-disciplinary group of artists, born and raised in San Francisco (Week 7). All enrolled students are invited. "Intro to IDA: Power, Art, + Practice" is an Institute for Diversity in the Arts Core Course. Students who are interested in our Artists in Resonance (AiR,) Lyric McHenry Community Arts Fellowship, and IDA Fellowship are strongly encouraged to enroll.
