This course will be a combination of lectures and reading including discussion covering the effects of density stratification on flows in the natural environment. Topics include: basic properties of linear and nonlinear internal waves in layered and continuous stratification, flows established by internal waves, internal hydraulics, gravity currents, and turbulence in stratified fluids. Recommended math background: vector calculus, ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations.
