Combine your passion for art with the science of the ocean in this immersive course on scientific illustration at Hopkins Marine Station. Blending biology, observation, and artistic techniques, this course trains students to translate the complexity of organisms and scientific concepts into imagery. Through hands-on studio work and field trips, you will learn foundational techniques in drawing, composition, and digital illustration, while also gaining a deeper understanding of marine biodiversity. Using both traditional media (graphite, ink, watercolor) and digital illustration technology, students will practice the art of accurately depicting biological specimens and scientific concepts. Tidepooling field trips will allow you to explore the abundant diversity of marine life in Monterey Bay. Whether you're interested in the ocean, science communication, or art, this course offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of art and marine biology. No previous art experience is necessary, only a willingness to learn! This course takes place in person at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station. A limited travel stipend may be available for students traveling to Hopkins Marine Station - located approximately OCEANS 80 miles south of Stanford's main campus in Pacific Grove, CA.
