What insights can a novel offer about the concept of coming-of-age? How does the evolution of a young character inform our understanding of films and novels? We examine how societal norms such as family, education, gender, and economic structures impact our perception of "development" for young individuals and the narrative itself. We focus on specific Latin American films and novels to understand how those works either challenge or reinforce our perception of personal and social narratives. Taught in Spanish. Students must have taken SPANLANG ILAC 13 or equivalent. Students may enroll in the related course SPANLANG ILAC 121 "Concurrent Writing Support" for one-on-one language learning. SPANLANG ILAC 121: One-on-one coaching in Spanish-language writing. Emphasis is on style and diction, and on preparing, writing, and revising essays on related topics.
