Introduction to Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology

This course will focus on understanding the conditions required for igneous and metamorphic rocks to form and to what extent these rocks record their tectonic and geologic settings of origin. Lectures will concentrate on the fundamentals of igneous and metamorphic petrology (e.g., phase equilibria, thermodynamics of igneous-metamorphic rocks) while labs will have both hand sample and optical petrology assignments that mimic field studies of magmatic/metamorphic provinces. This course may have a weekend field trip component over Memorial Day Weekend.
