This course will focus on the foundational science of identifying, classifying, and interpreting rock-forming minerals with a focus on minerals formed through magmatic and metamorphic processes. Lectures will focus on mineral physics, mineral properties, and its applications to understanding the interior of the earth. Labs will focus on both hand sample mineral identification as well as principals of optical mineralogy.
