COMPLIT 248

Indigenous Literatures and Cultures of the Americas (COMPLIT 347G, ILAC 247, ILAC 347G)

UNITS:5
GRADING:Letter or Credit/No Credit
LEVEL:Graduate
GER:—

What are 'Indigenous' literatures, and who are 'Indigenous' writers? What do they write about, and how do they represent themselves? What are the best methodologies used by scholars who write about Indigeneity and decoloniality? Through the study of theory, literature, and the visual arts by Indigenous authors from across the Americas, we will consider, among other topics, historical representations and idealizations of Indigenous peoples, the idea of a future after an apocalypse, and alternative ways of relating to the environment. We will explore the diverse forms of Indigenous authorship and cultural production that exist across the Americas, as well as in the context of a globalized world. We will read authors such as Humberto Ak'abal (K'iche Maya), Ruperta Bautista (Tzotzil Maya), Yasnaya Elena Aguilar Gil (Mixe), and Leslie Marmon Silko (Laguna Pueblo). Attendance is required. If you wish to join after the first week, please email Professor Regina Pieck (repieck@stanford.edu).
