Nanomedicine: Drug Delivery and Clinical Translation

The Nanomedicine (Drug Delivery and Clinical Translation) course, led by Professor Paolo Decuzzi, is an interdisciplinary course that bridges engineering, life sciences, and clinical medicine to provide a comprehensive understanding of how nanotechnology is revolutionizing healthcare. Designed primarily for life science and medical students, the course integrates principles from biophysics, pharmacology, materials science, and biomedical engineering to prepare participants to conceptualize, design, and evaluate nanoscale therapeutics and diagnostic systems. The course emphasizes translational research, focusing on the full pipeline from basic scientific discovery to clinical application and regulatory approval. Through engagement with seminal scientific publications, case studies of FDA- and EMA-approved nanomedicines, and interactive discussions, students gain an appreciation for how innovative nanotechnologies progress from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside. An emerging dimension of the course explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into nanomedicine research. Students are introduced to how ML workflows can be applied to optimize nanoparticle formulation, predict drug delivery performance, and accelerate the design of precision nanomedicines. By combining scientific rigor, computational innovation, and clinical insight, the Nanomedicine course promotes the interdisciplinary thinking required to advance the next-generation nanomedicines and personalized medicine.
