Cancer now devastatingly affects 1 in 3 Americans. For this reason, much of medicine is now focused on the diagnosis & treatment of cancer. Radiology is one such field, which involves the interpretation of medical imaging. Uniquely, this specialty spans the continuum of a patient's cancer care, from initial detection, staging, treatment planning, & surveillance. In this seminar, we bring to light the fundamentals of cancer imaging. Who is a diagnostic radiologist & what is their role in cancer imaging? What are the most common imaging techniques used for cancer detection? How do MRI & CT differ in identifying tumors? We will venture into the hospital's radiology reading rooms to see radiology in action & behind the scenes. We will visit the outpatient clinic for a hands-on experience with ultrasound-guided biopsies. Students will witness interdisciplinary tumor boards where a team of radiologists, surgeons, & oncologists discuss a patient's imaging & ultimately their cancer care plan. In our seminar, we will use case studies & medical narratives to further explore these topics. A heavy emphasis will be placed on cancer detection & screening, as well as the role of imaging to diagnose & treat cancer. We are so excited to teach you about the future of medicine as it relates to cancer & radiology. Students of pre-med & non pre-med specialties are encouraged to apply.
