This course is a survey course of economic development in China with emphasis on understanding the process of economic reform, transition, and development during the past OSPBEIJ 20 years. China now has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and China and the Chinese economy now receive a great deal of attention in the mass media. One goal of the course is to help students develop an informed perspective on the different historical stages, economic and political rationale, and effectiveness of the economic policies and institutional changes that have shaped China's economic emergence. In this sense, the course is very much a selected topics course with a broad range of topics covered, ranging from China's historical legacies, the Mao era, and the policies that generated growth in the post-Mao period. NOTE: Same as ECON 131. Students may not earn credit for both OSPBEIJ OSPBEIJ 30 and ECON 131.
