Science and law often operate in parallel, with each serving as a footnote to the other rather than being informed by meaningful collaboration and knowledge exchange. This disconnect is particularly pronounced in the field of marine science and policy. Stanford is uniquely positioned at the intersection of world-leading expertise in both law and ocean science. This policy lab will bring these disciplines together to inform action at the science-policy interface in coastal and open ocean ecosystems. Building from existing work undertaken by our partners, we anticipate a range of climate, sustainability, and conservation projects in such areas as plastic pollution, deep sea mining, climate geoengineering, offshore energy development, and marine mammal protection. After the term begins, students accepted into the course may be able to transfer from section (LAW 01) into section (LAW 02), which meets the R requirement, with consent of the instructor. Elements used in grading: Attendance, performance, class participation, written assignments, final paper. CONSENT APPLICATION: Interested students should submit a Policy Lab application (go to link SLS Registrar https://registrar.law.stanford.edu/).
