This community-engaged course, developed in partnership with Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA), offers students the opportunity to apply their Spanish language skills and social awareness to real-world legal advocacy work. Students collaborate with CLSEPA attorneys and staff on projects focused on immigration access, community outreach, and other legal services interpretation support. The course emphasizes ethical community engagement, cross-cultural communication, and the role of legal advocacy in advancing equity and human rights. Possible placements include community research, survey design, data analysis, and presentation of findings to assess community needs and the impact of legal services on economic stability and inclusion. Immigration intake including callbacks, scheduling, data collection, and referral coordination for community members seeking immigration legal support. Cross-program interpretation support such as intake support, client interviews, interpretation, and assistance with immigration, housing, and economic advancement programs as needed. Course will be conducted in Spanish. This is a Cardinal Course certified by the Haas Center for Public Service.
