This course offers a transnational history of the Japanese Empire, focusing on its expansion into and governance of Hokkaido, Okinawa, Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria; migration to North America; total war and imperial mobilization; and the ways in which imperial legacies continue to shape contemporary issues, including the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, the politics of the comfort women debate, and the experiences of resident (Zainichi) Koreans.
