Experimental Earth and Planetary System Analysis (AA 235)

This course introduces geophysical field methods with an emphasis on gravity and seismic techniques used to probe the Earth and planetary interior. We will examine how these approaches are applied in terrestrial setting and in planetary missions, drawing examples from the Apollo era to the current and future exploration of the Moon and Mars. Topics include geospatial positioning, potential theory, gravimetry instrumentation, gravity data reduction, gravity modeling, as well as seismic methods for subsurface imaging and event detection. Students will participate in field-based laboratories, including GPS positioning exercises, gravimetry surveys and seismic data collection. The class will incorporate a field trip focused on geophysical data collection. Through these activities, students will gain practical skills in designing experiments, acquiring and processing geophysical data and interpreting results, preparing them for future Earth and planetary field geophysical campaigns.n
