FILMPROD 101M

Science/Fiction: Screenwriting about Science

UNITS:5
GRADING:Letter (ABCD/NP)
LEVEL:Undergrad
GER:—

The bounds of human knowledge are pushed and reshaped by scientific research, but transforming those discoveries into cinematic material isn't simple. Without slipping into cartoonish Sci-Fi, how can creative people imagine science, technology, engineering, and math as source material for entertainment? How can climate science stories avoid "preachy" polemics? Or nanotech affect us at human scale? Or medical innovations be realized realistically? In this writing workshop, students will discover the screenwriting medium along with case studies in science-based cinema and visits from Stanford researchers to create original science-based scripts, treatments, and pitch decks.
