Conjure Art is a movement and embodied practice-based course that explores the work and techniques of visual and performance artists who utilize spiritual ritual practices in the making and presentation of their works to evoke social change. In this course we discuss these works, their impact, and questions of spiritual accountability and appropriation. Throughout the quarter we will welcome guest artists who make work along these lines, and explore creating our own rituals using movement, writing, voice, drawing, and divination practices as methods for developing one's own rituals for exploring Conjure in their work. This class culminates in a performance co-created by students and instructor.
