Introduction to seismic design for undergraduate students. Structural design concepts are introduced based on physical and mathematical principles. General overview of mechanics of materials, structural analysis, structural systems and earthquake resistant design. The class is intended to prepare students for the EERI Seismic Design Competition, where students design, analyze and fabricate a tall balsa wood structure. Hands on workshops focus on numerical simulation using structural analysis software, model fabrication, and experimental testing. All majors are welcome. Pre-requisite: Physics CEE 41, recommended: ENGR 14.
