Biosciences for a Sustainable World

Our world is changing rapidly, and how to respond and adapt to these changes is a key question for the scientific community. Science is a way to not only study the world, but to actively take part in shaping the future. Timely reflection on scientific practices and revising default modes of working is needed to overcome historical biases and lead to more effective science practices and robust scientific outcomes. Our mini-course will bring together students from diverse disciplines including STEM and the Environmental Humanities to discuss questions including 'What are acts of science? What are our moral responsibilities as scientists and engineers? How can the practice of science change to meet sustainability and stewardship needs of the present and future?' Through (1) community building and discussion, (2) engaging in dialogue with invited speakers and (3) hands-on activities and a field trip, we will share our dreams for a sustainable future of science and consider how to put those goals into practice in our research.
