This independent study invites students to collaborate with performance maker and social practice artist Erika Chong Shuch on 1000 Ways to Hold, a year-long participatory project that uses clay and conversation to explore intimacy, memory, and connection in a time of social fragmentation. Students will take part in designing the experience, facilitating and documenting dialogue between participants, and/or creating a living digital archive and final installation that captures the textures of shared experience. Open to undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines - arts, humanities, sciences, and beyond - the course offers hands-on engagement at the intersections of social practice, ceramics, performance, earth science, audio engineering and creative archiving. Students will gain experience in participatory artmaking, collaborative research, and cross-disciplinary storytelling, culminating in a public installation and community event.
